General Purpose Monitoring or Accelerometer

Monitran General Purpose Monitoring Sensors are for use with PLC’s and other industrial controllers to provide the user with a continuous output of vibration usually as a 4-20mA signal. Changes in the monitor signal will allow the user to spot vibration changes in the part of the machine to which the sensor is attached. Rapid changes accompany such conditions as machinery working loose from its mountings, fan blade malfunction, bearing failure all of which require immediate attention and machine shutdown to avoid widespread damage and loss of machine time. If the signal is logged at regular intervals, gradually increasing vibration indicates wear in the part of the machine where the sensor is fitted calling for replacement or detailed study with a portable vibration analyser.

This type of information is required in a wide range of environments so while the basic output is common to all sensors in this category there are many variations allowing them to be used in those different environments ranging from:

  • standard industrial conditions
  • submersible and long term wet operation
  • approved under ATEX, IECEx and ANZEx for use in hazardous areas


Two series are available: our long-standing, tried and trusted 1185 and 1187 ranges and the newly available 2285 and 2287 range with enhanced performance for more demanding applications. 2285 and 2287 series sensors feature redesigned electronics plus an internal Faraday shield giving:

  • much reduced noise and interference in real industrial environments
  • improved isolation and easier connection

  • These piezoelectric vibration sensors have been designed for application under rough environmental conditions. They are dust and water protected. Their mounting base is insulated to avoid ground loops which may cause errors, particularly, close to big machinery. The cable has to be ordered separately according to the requirements of length and quality (e.g. high temperature, oil resistant, flexible metal tubing).
  • Models KSI80VC and KSI82VB are compatible with 4-20 mA current loop equipment.
  • The transducers KS80D and KSI 8xVB are available with ATEX compliance certificate.

    High Sensitivity Accelerometers

    The piezoelectric accelerometers on this page are intended for the measurement of lowest vibrations. Typical fields of application include the monitoring of buildings, dams, bridges, oil platforms and pipelines. These sensors are often called seismic accelerometers because they are used to monitor construction activity, volcanoes and earthquakes. Their high sensitivity is achieved -unlike other high sensitivity accelerometers- by the sensing element itself and not by internal amplification.     • These piezoelectric accelerometers are particularly suited for small and light test objects. Of particular advantage may also be their high resonant frequencies. Due to the piezoelectric principle with its wide dynamic range both high acceleration and lowest vibration can be measured with the same sensor.     Eddy Current Probes as Accelerometer

    Eddy-Current sensors are noncontact devices capable of high-resolution measurement of the position and/or change of position of any conductive target. Eddy-Current sensors are useful in any application requiring the measurement or monitoring of the position of a conductive target, especially in a dirty environment. High resolution and tolerance of dirty environments make eddy-current sensors indispensable in today's modern industrial operations.


    External overview

    The Eddy Current Probe consists of a precision-wound copper coil inside a chemical- and temperature-resistant PEEK tip. This is mounted on a threaded stainless steel rod for easy gap adjustment or a flat, low-profile mount. It is supplied with 1m of integral overbraided coaxial cable. Operates up to 180˚C. Operating gap depends on the tip diameter. Can be used with any driver.


    Current output drivers give a 4-20mA output directly proportional to the measured component and allow direct connection to PLCs and other industrial controllers. Can be used with any probe type.

    It is an electrically isolated ultra high temperature piezoelectric charge mode accelerometer designed to operate reliably in temperatures up to +1000°F (530°C). This workhorse accelerometer is characterized by its small size and by an internal electrical isolation design that eliminates the need for an additional isolated mounting block to prevent ground loop interference.

    A unique, single-crystal, planar shear charge mode sensing element mounted in a miniature hermetically sealed Inconel™ housing enables Model 3316C2 to operate at extremely high temperatures over long periods of time. Model 3316C2 employs Silver Window ™ technology. A "silver window" on the top cover of the accelerometer housing allows a diffused oxygen molecule to pass through at high temperatures, replenishing oxygen to the crystal while maintaining the hermetic seal integrity. This innovative feature assures continued high temperature operation with no loss of insulation resistance due to oxygen deprivation.

    Proximity sensors work on the eddy current principle. A proximity system consists of an eddy current probe, extension cable and driver. A high-frequency RF signal is generated by the driver, sent through the extension and probe cables and radiated from the probe tip. The tip consists of a precision wound copper coil inside a chemical and temperature resistant PEEK case.


    The tip is either mounted on a threaded stainless steel rod allowing easy gap adjustment on a bracket via two locking nuts or a flat, low profile mount. The driver demodulates the signal, amplifies and line arises it to provide an output proportional to the probe to target gap and/or vibration of the target.
